Trying to consistently maintain good grades, please your parents, and in the meantime try to hang out with your friends, can become very overwhelming.
The Super Suicide Society from A Separate Peace and Dead Poets Society from The Dead Poets Society were both essentially formed in an effort to make their schooling less stressful.
This helped them to have an outlet where they could not only forget the pressures facing them, but also help them to grow and become better individuals.
Novelist John Knowles, whose 1960 book “A Separate Peace” became a modern classic for its sensitive evocation of adolescent conflict, died Thursday after a short illness at a convalescent home near Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Knowles’ first and best-known work was based on his experiences at Phillips Exeter Academy, a well-known New Hampshire boarding school.
His avowedly autobiographical debut novel, he often acknowledged, made him famous and gave him financial security. “And what touches me most, what pleases me most, is that people who are far removed from the world of prep schools love it.”One of the characters, Brinker, was based on Gore Vidal, who was a few years ahead of Knowles at Exeter in the mid-1940s. Then I got to know him, because I thought ‘A Separate Peace’ was a marvelous book.
Decades after its original publication, “Separate Peace” was selling half a million copies a year and remains a staple of high school and college reading lists. The two writers eventually became good friends.“I have no memory of him when we were in school together,” Vidal said Thursday from his home in Italy. It was beyond anything he ever did later and anyone else had done of that sort, with the possible exception of [J. Salinger’s] ‘Catcher in the Rye.’ ”When Knowles made his literary debut, one reviewer eagerly asked: “Is he the successor to Salinger for whom we have been waiting for so long? What is selfish is not the real motives of the person but the metaphorical motives of the genes that built the person. The pressures of getting an education can be very stressful. Both the Super Suicide Society and the Dead Poets Society provided an outlet from the pressures of their education and helped the members to conquer their fears. These two secret societies provided an outlet from the pressures of their schooling. This society required people who wanted to join to do a daring jump out of a tree and into a river down below. In A Dead Poets Society, all of the kids in the private school were pushed by their parents to keep doing better in school. We were going to have to be pitted against each other. For Quackenbush had been systematically disliked since he first set foot in Devon, with careless, disinterested insults coming at him from the beginning, voting for and applauding the class leaders through years of attaining nothing he wanted for himself.I didn't want to add to his humiliations; I even sympathized with his trembling, goaded egotism he could no longer contain, the furious arrogance which sprang out now at the mere hint of opposition from someone he had at last found whom he could consider inferior to himself. Not of the tree and pain, but of one of his favorite tricks, Phineas in exaltation, balancing on one foot on the prow of a canoe like a river god, his raised arms invoking the air to support him, face transfigured, body a complex set of balances and compensations, each muscle aligned in perfection with all the others to maintain this supreme fantasy of achievement, his skin glowing from immersions, his whole body hanging between river and sky as though he had transcended gravity and might by gently pushing upward with his foot glide a little way higher and remain suspended in space, encompassing all the glory of the summer and offering it to the sky.” ― “I turned with an inward groan to look at him.Quackenbush wasn't going to let me just do the work for him like the automaton I wished to be.
