In Ayn Rand's novel Anthem, the main character Equality 7-2521 battles internal and external conflicts in order to discover his individuality.

Equality 7-2521 struggles with many internal conflicts that help him discover his true self.

Equality cannot hold his strong thoughts of the Golden One appear in his mind.

Equality's differences make him a strong individual who is ready for any challenge.To free her writing from all traceable associations with her former life, she invented for herself the name Ayn Rand and set out, like the hero of her story, to make a new life for herself, in freedom. Hoping to write for film, she traveled to Hollywood, where she found that the studios had little interest in her work.She supported herself as a waitress, a movie extra, a clerk in a studio wardrobe department.Equality 7-2521's society causes him to go through many external conflicts that destroy his spirit, but strengthen his mind.For example, because Equality is so interested in the way things work, "he ask[s] so many questions that the Teachers [forbid] it" (23).Prometheus seeks the freedom to learn about the world and science when he is receiving his primary education.He wants to be enlightened in a society where everything is shadowed by laws and limits.Anthem is a depiction of the Ayn Rand's view on collectivism, and introduces us to the ideals of objectivism.The protagonist of the novel, Prometheus is born into a society which worships the word "we," and in which the individual is crushed and his identity erased by the great power of collectivism.In addition, after Equality refuses to tell of his whereabouts after going to the tunnel, the oldest judge that they "lash [him] until [he] tell[s]" (64).The judges are scared that Equality will find some hidden fact that the judges do not want to be discovered.
