The MSW Admissions Committee is looking for evidence of leadership ability, experience, or interest in working with diverse populations or oppressed groups; commitment to social and economic justice; and other interests congruent with WVU’s School of Social Work mission and social work practice in a rural setting.
In one to two paragraphs, describe an ethical dilemma you have faced in your personal or professional experiences and how you handled the situation.
Additional requirements are in place for applicants to the Advanced Standing and Employed Practitioners programs, as described below: Applicants for admission to the Advanced Standing Program must have: Applicants must submit transcripts detailing all undergraduate and postgraduate study.
This includes coursework conducted at an applicant’s degree-granting institution(s) as well as in study abroad programs and at institutions out of which an applicant may have transferred.
Admission decisions are based on the applicant’s undergraduate record (and graduate transcripts when applicable), experience in human services (paid, volunteer, internships), the application essay, recommendation letters and the admissions interview.
Social Work Essays Application
Applicants to the MSW program are expected to meet the following criteria: The School does not give course credit for life or work experience. Program-Specific Admissions Requirements: All applicants must meet the requirements outlined above.Three professional letters of recommendation are required.Contact information for these individuals should be provided within the online Graduate Application.Are there any ethical issues that you may need to address? Priority consideration is given to Advanced Standing applications received by January 15th; priority consideration is given to all other MSW program applications, including Full-time (two-year), Part-time (three year), Employed Practitioners, and dual-degree programs, received by January 25th.How will you reconcile any conflicts between your personal values and the social work profession?In one to two paragraphs, (1) describe an aspect of social work that interests you most, (2) explain how you became interested in this issue and (3) identify how you think social work, as a profession, should respond to this issue.Responses may also include solutions at the policy, program, or practice levels of social work.If necessary, applicants can submit an addendum section of their application essay that addresses any gaps or deficiencies in their academic record, including incomplete grades, withdrawals from courses, etc.The Advanced Standing program begins in the summer term; all other programs begin in the fall term.Students are admitted to the MSW program once a year in the fall and to the full-time Advanced Standing program in July.
